Recommendation is one way, research on the Internet is another. The main thing is to ask those you TRUST to give you direction. I have an excellent planner that had been recommended by a longtime trusted neighbor/friend. Maybe I'm lucky cause I've heard of others being burned by oh my cousin is a financial planner or broker (DON'T CONFUSE BROKERS FOR FINANCIAL PLANNERS!!!). I'd go to a financial adviser it is worth it in the long run.
I myself am a financial adviser and have an independent office. I happily assist in helping with anyone's finances, for a small fee.
What type of financial advice do you need? If it's paying off debt, you'd do better to manage that yourself. Check out one of Dave Ramsey's books (Financial Peace or Your Total Money Makeover).





If your looking for investment advice, look for a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). Make sure you know up-front how they get paid. Some make a commission off your investments, which can skew their advice. I'd only pay a flat-fee or hourly rate.

A financial advisor. There are two types, basically. An independant(IFA), he would choose the best options from the whole spectrum, but you will have to pay a fee. Others get their money as commission from the companies they are connected with, so they will only pick the best from them.
Train yourself to be your own financial advisor.
If you are in the UK you could try Citizens Advice Bureau or the Consumer Credit Council. They;re set up to help people that need them.
