What should I advise my long lost brother to buy my mum for her birthday?

My mum has recently got in touch with her son that she had adopted when he was born. My brother and I are meeting him for the first time on our mums birthday on the 18th. He sent me a birthday card (my birthday is tomorrow) and in it he asked for advice about what to get our mum. I have no idea what to get her myself, let alone what to tell him to get her. She likes travelling (she is currently in S.Africa), but i'm not really sure what else. Mumsy things really! She's about 55What should I advise my long lost brother to buy my mum for her birthday?
A photo album with pictures of him growing up - Which she has missed. What should I advise my long lost brother to buy my mum for her birthday?
i would buy her a satellite navigation system so she will never lose touch with her family ever again, and maybe a satellite phone and some kendal mint cake
Flowers are always nice. Its up to you, you know her!!!
How about taking her to dinner and maybe a movie or something just the two of them so they can spend quality time together. He could give her a card telling her to choose the time and place.

Hope this helps. Good luck to your family.
A photo album put together with photos of him growing up might be nice.
a birthday card for every year missed with a pic in each one of him at the age he was .....good luck with your meeting hope all goes well xx
Something personal that she can keep
A situation like that calls for flowers . With flowers you cant loose. then when he knows her better the gifts can get more personal.

Congrats on your new family. I am very happy for you all.
How about you all go out for dinner together I am sure this will mean more to her than a present
A jewelry is always a good choice. What about a pendent that says:';Love you, Mom.';?
well - it it was my Mum - i would buy a gift voucher that allows her to go to a beautition salon or massage%26amp;spa salon ... hmmm ....
One of my mates got her mother a dvd done up. You choose a song to go in the background to set the mood then photos that you choose starting from youngest to oldest blend into eah other in turn. You can have a message put in at the beginning or end or both. This is like a photo album diary. Everybody loved it and most people started crying. You can find someone to do this in wedding photography/videoing services.
He could get her flowers, and maybe you could both put together for a theatre trip with a meal in a plush restaurant. If funds run to it, how about an overnight stay in a nice hotel to end the evening?
a digital photo frame from all of you,so she can have a photo of all of you? they are main/battery powered.
A portrait of the family with him on.

Need advise on repairing a bumper?

i have 93 civic ex fully tune up from head to toe but it crashed couple weeks ago and im on a tight buget and the only thing that is wrong with it is the bumper...its aftermarket bumper its missing small chunk on the left side of the bumper and its not holding right can someone please tell me what i can do to fix this small hole with? i tried using some kinda of clay thing which is use to hold wood together its what like u call ';super glue';but for wood and its taken to long to dry up

so im just looking for quick tips on how to repair holes on bumpers or anything like that

thanks for all your help i appreciated.Need advise on repairing a bumper?
Best to patch the hole with a fiberglass repair kit...most parts stores carry them. You'll have to repaint the repaired area afterwards.

This company does small bumper repairs if they have a service in your area...

Do you have advise for a new runner?

Just started cool running.com's Couch potato to 5K program. Feel good about it

Runners- what are you thoughts on starting to run. what goals did you set? what did you find helpful when you were starting out? Anything I should avoid?

Thanks!Do you have advise for a new runner?
just have fun. Yhe biggest race you run is the one in your head. Be gentle with yourself. Take it easy and don't compare your insides to other people outsides. Don't measure yourself by any other yard stick but your own.

Congadulations for getting up and out.

Good job have funDo you have advise for a new runner?
I ran competitively so I focused on first of all getting in shape and working on my diet. Then working on my form. I am a natural runner so I just aimed for running good times and placing well at our meets.

I found that if you have a good support system it really helps. For me that was upperclassmen, my family, and friends. It kept me motivated because people I never met before had heard of me! Drinking a lot of water helps, and really trying to watch what you eat and staying away from junk food and pop/coffee.

If you feel any pain for more than a week go to your doctor to get it checked. Maybe get someone to do the program with you so you can stay motivated. If you have any more questions please email me...good luck! :)
Find something to keep your mind away from being tired, something like music or just constantly thinking about something else than your actually running....... besides that just push it to the limits and hard work pays of.......

p.s. try running some stairs that really helps with getting lean legs.......
I would say staay calm but really right before the official shoots the gun you have so much adrenalyn you cant... i just set a goal not to be last and i run 2400m and 1600m so i have a different friend run a lap with me every six laps when i run to keep me going strong and have somebody to talk to and so i wont die. But the adrenalyn keeps me going.

I want to install motion detector in my home please advise me to select the device at reasonable rate?

I have several motion sensors, doing different things like turning on lights and ringing chimes. In the US they can be purchased from RadioShack, or as I did, from X10. You can find both on the Internet.

Any ( All) advise you can give to a ( soon to be) Guinea Pig owner?

I'm going to get a Guinea Pig in about a month and want to know as much as posibal to make a great owner and have a happy helthy Pig. Any suggestions about the care and keeping of a Guinea Pig for a first time owner?Any ( All) advise you can give to a ( soon to be) Guinea Pig owner?
Well done for doing your research before getting your pet!

    1) Get at least two pigs. Guinea pigs are a social species and need the company of their own kind. Living alone is totally unnatural for them and causes a variety of health and welfre problems. You can have two girls, two boys, or a girl with a neutered boy.

    2) Guinea pigs need a lot of room to be happy and healthy. The minimum cage size is 7.5 - 8 sq feet of loor space, although bigger is always better.

The best cages are homemade C+C cages. These are really cheap and easy to make, can be made any size or shape you like, are easy to clean out etc.

    3) Safe bedding. Cedar and pine contain high levels of phenols which cause respiratory and liver disease. Use either hardwood bedding (eg aspen) or a paper bedding (Carefresh or Megazorb).

    4) Hay, hay and more hay! Hay is vital for proper digestion, wearing down teeth and preventing boredom - it must be available at all times. Timothy hay is the usual but any grass hay is fine.

    5) Pigs need a variety of fresh veggies daily. Lettuce (NOT iceburg) is good, and bell pepper and cilantro are great for vitamin C. (I will give you a link to find a detailed veggies list).

    6) Feed a good quality guinea pig pellet - either Oxbow or Kleenmama's. Most other brands are dangerous, unhealthy junk.

Do NOT feed any mineral wheels, store bought treats etc as these are very unhealthy.

    7) Toys - you need at least one hidey per pig plus a few toys. Other good toys include cardboard boxes and tubes, tunnels to run through, paper bags stuffed with hay or veggies, cuddle cups, cozies, safe jungly cat balls, etc.

Do NOT use a wheel or ball for guinea pigs - their backs are not flexible enough to use them properly and they can be seriously injured!

    8) Handle your pigs every day so they get used to you. Bribery also works really well, so try handfeeding them their favourite veggies!

    9) Get some decent pet nail clippers, as you will need to cut their nails so they don't overgrow. Make sure not to cut the ';quick';, the blood vessel that runs into the nail.

    10) Get a sturdy food bowl they can't tip over and a water bottle.

Do NOT put vit C drops in the water - it doesn't work and can harm your pigs! Guinea pigs need to get their vitamin C from their diet - quality pellets and daily veggies.

    11) Last, but not least, please adopt - don't buy. There are thousands of lovely guinea pigs looking for homes - check out local rescues and shelters, or try sites like Craigslist and Petfinder.

    Cost

When you first get your pet, you’ll need to spend about $35 for a cage. Food runs about $75 a year, plus $25 annually for toys and treats, $50 for an annual veterinary check-up and $400 per year for litter and bedding material. We recommend getting your guinea pig from a responsible breeder or, even better, adopting one from a shelter or small-animal rescue group.

    Housing

Guinea pigs are social animals who prefer to live in small groups. If you keep two or more females together, they will become great friends. If you want two males, it’s smart to choose two babies from the same litter. Since guinea pigs, like all rodents, multiply rapidly, keeping males and females together is not recommended.

As a rule of thumb, you’ll need to provide a minimum of four square feet of cage space per guinea pig—but please try to get as large a cage as possible. You’ll need a solid-bottom cage—no wire floors, please, as they can irritate your pets’ feet. Plastic-bottom “tub cages” with wire tops also make great guinea pig homes. Never use a glass aquarium, due to the poor ventilation that it provides.

Always keep the cage indoors away from drafts and extreme temperatures, as guinea pigs are very susceptible to heatstroke. They’ll prefer an environment kept at 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Line the bottom of the cage with aspen or hardwood shavings or some other form of safe bedding, such as grass hay. Do not use cedar or pine chips—the oils they contain can be dangerous to your pets. (P.S. Yes, you can train a guinea pig to use a litter box—but please note that this will require lots of time and patience!)

Guinea pigs love to hide when they play, so be sure to place cardboard tubes and/or empty coffee cans with smoothed edges in the enclosure for this purpose. Plastic pipes and flower pots are good, too, and bricks and rocks for climbing will be much appreciated. All guinea pigs need a cave for sleeping and resting, so please provide a medium-sized flower pot or covered sleeping box, readily available at pet supply stores.

    Diet

Commercial guinea pig pellets should make up the bulk of your pet’s diet. Nutritionally complete, they’re available at pet supply stores, and are made from plants, seeds and veggies. Feed your guinea pigs twice daily, in the morning and in the evening.

The ASPCA recommends offering small amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables to your guinea pigs every day. Try grapes, cucumbers, corn, peas, carrots and pears. Half a handful of veggies and a slice of fresh fruit per pig is plenty. Always make sure to clean up any leftover fresh food before it spoils. You’ll also need to make grass hay available to your pets at all times. It’s great for the digestive system, and will also satisfy your pet’s need to gnaw.

Unlike other animals, guinea pigs cannot manufacture Vitamin C, so you’ll need to ensure that your pets get enough of this essential nutrient every day. A quarter of an orange will do, but you can also include some fruits and veggies that are high in C to their daily ration of fresh foods, such as kale, dandelion greens and strawberries.

Fresh, clean water should be available at all times. Use an inverted bottle with a drinking tube, and change the water daily.

    General Care

Remove soiled bedding, droppings and stale food from the cage daily. Clean the cage completely once a week by replacing dirty bedding and scrubbing the bottom of the cage with warm water. Be sure everything’s dry before adding fresh bedding.

Did you know that guinea pigs’ teeth grow continuously, just like those of other rodents? That’s why it is important that you provide yours with something to gnaw on at all times. Branches and twigs from untreated trees will work, as will any small piece of wood that hasn’t been treated with chemicals.

It’s crucial that you get your pets used to you—and used to being handled. Start by feeding them small treats. When they’re comfortable with that, you can carefully pick up one pig at a time, one hand supporting the bottom, the other over the back.

Once you have hand-tamed your piggies, you should let them run around in a small room or enclosed area to get some additional exercise every day. You will need to carefully check the room for any openings from which the guinea pigs can escape, get lost and possibly end up hurt. These animals must be supervised when they are loose because they will chew on anything in their paths—including electrical wires.

Guinea pigs are very conscientious about grooming themselves, but brushing them on a regular basis will help keep their coat clean and remove any loose hairs. Long-haired guinea pigs should be brushed daily in order to prevent tangles and knots from forming.

    Veterinary Care

If you think one of your guinea pigs is sick, don’t delay—seek medical attention immediately. Common signs that something isn’t right include sneezing, coughing, diarrhea and lethargy. Guinea pigs are also susceptible to external parasites such as mites

  • Going to Japan on my own at 17....What advise can you give me?

In the summer of 2007 (after school), I will travel to Okayama, then to Gose(Nara-prefecture)...then Kanzawa, Ishikawa. What advise can you give me about everything.

Sure, i have been to Japan before, but i wasn't alone.

I want to know how the bullet train/train/transportation systems work, how the airports work and everything there is i need to know.

PS: I will go for rouughtly 3-4 months or more...and I will on my own at 17 years old...please, any advise would be helpful.

Also I need to be in Okayama first...how do I go from Okayama to Nara to kanazawa...and maybe tokyo after...

Thank you*Going to Japan on my own at 17....What advise can you give me?
Some people will stress that you must follow a tonne of customs, but don't be concerned about that - when you get there you'll realise quickly what is important and what is not. The main one is taking shoes off to enter homes, the inside of temples, and many restaurants.

The food and water are extremely safe, as is Japan in general.

You might have a bit of trouble with the train system at first (not everything is in english) but you will pick it up after a few days of using trains. There are different networks that are operated by different companies, eg. JR (Japan Rail) and the metro in Tokyo. This is important to know, and you will often find yourself walking a long way to the other end of Tokyo station to get on a different network, and maps are exclusive to each company.

There is nothing special to know about the international airports, as there are English speaking people there and it is no different to anywhere else.

At train stations however, don't expect to always find an english speaking employee. If you get really stuck, the best option is to find someone who looks school or university age and ask if they speak english.

Buses - you pay when you get off. Some are a flat rate no matter where you get off.

If you don't speak Japanese, eat at places with picture menus, where you can point at the picture.

Unless they ask you a question it is normal to purchase something from a shop without saying anything, even though the shop attendant will greet you and thank you.

It would be VERY smart to take a guidebook such as the Lonely Planet.

Try and see Kyoto as well if you can.Going to Japan on my own at 17....What advise can you give me?
WOW!!!! Lucky you! Sorry I don't have any advice. But you are so lucky to go to Japan all by yourself.
First of all, let's assume you don't need to make money or get a job. How are you going to stay 3-4 months? A tourist visa only lasts 90 days. Are you on a different visa?

First: the train system is very easy. First, figure out where the station you need to go to is. You will need a map of the train system as well. There are many different train companies: JR, Kintetsu, Hanshin, to name a few. Usually to get from large town to large town, you can just take JR. If you ask around (you will want to know some Japanese!) they can usually lead you to the closest JR station.

Once at the station, figure out which lines will lead to your destination. There is a map at each station. At the ticket machines, there is a special which has prices written on each station - this is how much it costs to get from that station to the others. Simply buy a ticket for that amount, then go through the gates and find the correct train.

There are many different kinds of trains on some lines, though. Sometimes there will be an express that only stops at larger stations. This information should be written on signs on the platform, or you can ask a conductor.

The bullet train (shinkansen) is almost the same, but you need special tickets to get on the shinkansen. You also can get reserved seats for the shinkansen. You don't have to, but only a few cars allow unreserved passengers, so you might not get a seat!

From Okayama, you should be able to take the shinkansen to Kyoto. From Kyoto, you can take a train to Nara. Then from Nara, go back to Kyoto where you can take a limited express train from Kyoto to Kanazawa. From Kanazawa, you can take the shinkansen to Tokyo.

Be prepared: that kind of travelling can get expensive!! Also, stick to train traveling - airplanes are more expensive than they need to be and they are much more of a hassle.

If you would tell us more, I could help you more, but your description is really vague. Are you sure you are ready to do this?

Edit: elovej04's thing about girls getting raped or whatever is a bunch of garbage. Japan streets are extremely safe, and even the small problem they had with old men groping girls on crowded trains is not really a problem anymore. Stop scaring people. Your friend who brought pepper spray to Japan is paranoid and stupid.
If you haven't done so already, learn enough Japanese to be able to ask for directions, etc.

I went to Japan a few years ago and learned a little conversational Japanese. It was the best thing I've ever done. There isn't much English in Japan (signs, etc) and most people don't speak English. So be prepared to speak with them in Japanese. It'll prevent you from getting horribly lost and/or eating really disgusting food.

Trust me...you'll be glad you did.
    good luck
I would advise you to tell your parents to find a good attorney.
Pick some books which teaches simple Hiragana and Katagana. That would be very helpful. Trust me, they are not difficult either.
    yeah..visit the hot-spring
    DON'T TRY THE SEA URCHIN

    BAD DIARRHOEA!!
    You're so lucky!

Just have fun and take care!
I'm assuming you'll be staying with a host family, so they should be able to help. Also, be extremely polite. When y ou'e eating, don't pass things to other people with your chopsticks, and don't leave them standing up in a piece of food....both have cultural significance having to do with death. Yak at a Japanese teacher and/or anyone you know who's visited Japan. Be careful of the tatami mats, and you generally want to take off your shoes when you enter a house. ALways remember to bow when you meet someone....the more respect you have for that person, the lower the bow should be. If it's a doctor or teacher, you bow really low. If you're just meeting a good friend or something, a brief nod will suffice. And do learn to use the cirrect honorifics for a person's name--- sensei is for professionals like doctors and teachers, san is Mr. or Ms., Chan is 'Miss or 'Little one' (but can also be for female friends), 'kun is for male friends---and DON'T use the honorifics when you are talking about yourself or your family. It's considered arrogant.

    I can't help you with transportation issues...sorry!
don't get lost and just have fun
Good idea to have on hand English-Japanese Translation book. You are in luck most Japanese speak English, English are taught as second language in Japan. You will not have any problems traveling even alone all you have to do is read signs its written both in English and Japanese.
Just be YOU, yourself, they'll look at you as a different kind anyhow.
I've never been to Japan, but my bf have traveled there on his own like 4 years ago, and according to him, English speaking didn't helped him at all when he was there, everything was on his own, so I guess you should really bring a translation book, if you can't speak it, at least you can show them the questions that you wanted to ask in Japanese, and it might help, and better than nothing....

AND PLEASE PAY ATTENTION IF YOU';RE A FEMALE!!!!!!

I don't know how things are in Japan right now, but according to friends' info, there're many bad people out on the street waiting for their female targets to get in their traps, and I'm serious, they're not just one or two random men, it comes like a gang of 10-12 guys all gang up on a female and rape her and video the whole thing, they have planned it out too, I thought it wasn't true, but my bro's gf just came back from Japan, and she asked my bro to buy her pepper spray to take back to Japan, that's why I believe the whole scandal is true and telling you this. Be award! I went to shop for my bro today, Big5 and sportmart sells them, so if you don't want to pay for shipping cost via online store, then you can get them local.

Good luck and god bless you~

Can anyone advise me about my daughters cramp?

please can anyone help with this? my 12 year old is getting cramp in her toes on and off all day, you can actually see her toes going into a strange shape, the g.p says she is healthy and fit, and she is. I hope this is enough info and someone can help me, many thanks to you all xCan anyone advise me about my daughters cramp?
I'd consider seeing another doctor who will do some more thorough testing. Might be a deficiency of some mineral. I would look at increasing levels of potassium, calcium, and particularly magnesium (banana's are good source). Some articles see link to type II diabetes, so rule it out. Also, from personal experience, I would look at reducing saturated fats. Eliminate fatty fast foods, particularly french fries. Instead eat lean proteins like chicken, turkey, fish (NOT fried), and lean beef and pork.

Here's an article I found that discusses other ideas. Good Luck!

http://www.everydayhealth.com/diabetes/t鈥?/a>Can anyone advise me about my daughters cramp?
She may low on dietary magnesium. A magnesium/calcium supplement often helps cramps.
I have had this same problem - two things helped me with it:

    1) Bananas

    2) Drink lots of water

Can you advise me how fast and safely(what kind of transport) to get to Buffalo NY from NYC?

Amtrack will get you from Buffalo (either Bflo downtown or Depew) in about 8 hours and 45 minutes for $79.

Greyhound bus will get you there in a little over 8 hours for $78Can you advise me how fast and safely(what kind of transport) to get to Buffalo NY from NYC?
Plane or Train to Penn Station. You could also get a bus. Not sure how long the drive would be though. Can you advise me how fast and safely(what kind of transport) to get to Buffalo NY from NYC?
    Buffalo to NYC?

I'd say drive, it'll be long, but you know.

If you take a plane, it'll probably be like a 30 minute to an hour ride. If you take a train, I'd say 3 hours.

Driving will be long and maybe dangerous. Go on mapquest and see how long the time and distance is from Buffalo to NYC.
airplane. safest way to get around.
ride yo bike( fat *** ),so ya'll could lose some wieght ,big black mama!!!!
I would suggest Amtrak. Its probably the most worry free way to make that trip since it offers the many comforts of a plane but without the hassle of airport security. You might enjoy a nice nap or a drink contrary to driving up.
I would travel by train - not as fast as a plane - but beautiful, scenic views.

If you truly need to get there fast, then a plane is the only way.
Drive your car. Or go by bus. Or go by plane. Or go by limo.

Depends on your financial situation and how much time you have.
The fastest way would be by plane. If you drive, you're looking at over six hours to get there, and by bus it will probably take ten because you have to stop often. If you have to drive, take the thruway; it's always the most direct and safest route to get anywhere in New York.
    crawl there.

Would you advise getting Cruise Insurance?

We are traveling on a 4 night cruise to mexico and not sure if we should spend the extra $120 for insurance. If we cancel we only get 75% of our money back towards another cruise. We are traveling with Royal Carribean...Would you advise getting Cruise Insurance?
I always purchase travel insurance for cruises, and it always is a lower price than what you are quoting -- the premium is based on the length of the cruise. One year ago my sister and I were booked for a lovely cruise, but a month before we were due to sail she had emergency surgery. The doctor's office did their bit with the medical proof, our travel agent did her bit with all of the details of the booking, and the insurance company paid 100% -- which we were able to spend on a cruise to Italy in March! As to which insurance to purchase, you should know that there are several choices available, and your travel agent can help you get the best one for you.Would you advise getting Cruise Insurance?
When is it? Here is the deal--during times of lots of hurricane activity (like some months where there is one out there every week) I do like to get it. Also when I have a lot going on in my life, I would. Let's say you have an uncle you are worried about who has been in and out of the hospital or your own health has been iffy and you may have to cancel b/c of that, it's definitely worth it to get insurance. But for the most part on a short cruise like a 4 night, I wouldn't bother. Right now the Pacific is having more hurricanes than the Atlantic so which side of Mexico are you going to?

It also depends on what kind of deal you are getting. Right now I've seen several for $200-300. Well in that case, the 25% you aren't getting back is only $50-75. Well the travel insurance is $120 so that's obviously a bad deal.
Believe me, if worse comes to worst with you financially (a very likely possibility with anyone in this economy, right now), you'll be glad you got the trip insurance and 75% of your money back.

You should get the insurance. It's always safer to hope for the best and plan for the worst.
Why would you cancel the cruise?

Even if you have insurance, it doesnt mean you can just cancel the cruise and expect a full refund. I have never got insurance. Save your money, skip the insurance.
no way..save your money...spend it in the casino!
The best way to answer that question is by considering the things that could possible go wrong and interfere with your cruise. So consider these and you decide based on the risks of these:

    1) Will the cruise be in the Caribbean or Mexico during the hurricane season, June through November?

    2) Will we fly across country and chance missing a plane connection; is there the possibility of missing a flight due to weather?

    3) Is someone in the family sickly and likely to cause us to miss the cruise?

    4) What other things may cause us to miss the cruise?

Your other option is to consider travel insurance through other means than the cruise line:

Use this site to compare: http://www1.insuremytrip.com/p/myquoteca鈥?/a>

    Or, use this site: http://www.travelex.com/us/personal/trav鈥?/a>

I usually get travel insurance only when we are flying to the cruise port, but mostly when we are flying out of the country.

Can we advise using metformin tabs in order to lose weight in nondiabetic young cases?

Well, first of all there are a lot of ways to lose weight in non-diabetic individuals, be it medicinal, surgical, or dietary control.

If you're only interested in medicinal therapy, Metformin does help in weight loss, but it's ';power'; is somewhat not that strong compared to other classes of drugs, such as Orlistat or Sibutramine.

The other thing to take note is that metformin is not without it's side effects. It can cause a lot of stomach discomfort, and sometimes diarrhea. In rare but fatal cases, metformin can cause Lactic Acidosis, a condition which can be aggravated by high levels of ketone in the blood. If the youth is dieting too intensely, ketones will rise in the blood, and Lactic acidosis can happen. Can we advise using metformin tabs in order to lose weight in nondiabetic young cases?
The article I read a couple of weeks ago about the amount of weight loss from taking Metformin was about .15%!!! Is that really worth the gastric distress Metformin causes in most people? I really don't think so.Can we advise using metformin tabs in order to lose weight in nondiabetic young cases?
can we? yes, it's being done. Should we? that's another ball of wax altogether.
Plain and simple.....no. Too much can go wrong. It is not a diet pill.....and besides, it does not cause that much weight loss. They need to change their diets and learn to exercise.

  • Looking for a new vacuum cleaner. Narrowed down to Eureka Boss Smart and a Dyson. Any advise?!?

Let's just say this, Eureka is to Dyson what Wal-Mart is to a Louis Vuitton store. There is a definite gap in quality and workmanship, as well as in long lasting durability between the two. I would definitely go with Dyson because they are not a company ran by shareholders, they are a company operated by engineers. Innovation is key to their success, as evident world wide in terms of sales and name brand recognition.

What basically sets Dyson apart from the rest of the lazy complacent vacuum cleaner market is it's technology. It's filtration system which uses high speed cyclones to separate dust and debris from the airstream (rather than bags and pleated filters that clog and lose suction), which results in no loss of suction, no matter how much debris and filth you vacuum up. In comparison, typical vacuums that use bags, or the bagless types that use pleated filters, lose suction instantly as they experience dust build-up on the surface of the filter or bag. Therefore, the more dust you pick up, the more suction you lose, plain and simple.

Now, I think Dyson is the way to go, but it is up to you to decide what model suits you best. They currently offer three full size models (with two more on the way). The first one in the DC07 upright. It was the first Dyson to be launched here in 2002, and it still is on sale today. It is your fairly basic model that starts at $400. The DC14 is nearly the same as the DC07, with the exception of a few upgrades. The filtration unit (called Root Cyclone) has been modified to provided even more efficient filtration. The cleaning wand instantly extends out of the top of the vacuum's handle, where as on the DC07, you would have to take the handle off, and pull out the wand and assemble it. It also features a suction channel at the very front of the floor nozzle which allows larger debris on the floor to be instantly sucked up, rather than being plowed around. The DC14 starts at $430

The DC15, which is the machine I current own, is almost the same as the DC14, with the exception of how it moves. Rather than rolling on wheels, the DC15 rolls on a large ball, which allows you to instantly move it through corners and curved areas without constant back and forth movements of a traditional wheeled upright. I should also note that the DC15 uses a direct motorized gear driven brush roll, which is better than the belt driven brush rolls used in the DC07 and DC14. These machines start out at $500. Now I must note that you should try the DC15, if you consider it, before you buy it. Some have felt that the DC15 felt too strange to move and preferred the DC14, while others enjoyed the flexible movement of the ball. I'll leave that up to you to decide.

Now, I feel you should know about the two new models that will be in stores in a couple of weeks. The first is the DC17. Basically a heavily modified DC14, it features a more aggressive brush roll more suitable for American carpets (The DC07 and DC14 were built for European carpets), with the brush roll being driven by a direct motorized gear drive system like the DC15. The DC17 will also feature a new filtration system called ';Level 3 Root Cyclone';, which is basically the same as the current Root Cyclone system, but with a third stage that recycles dust particles that bypass the cyclones back through the entire filtration process again, and again, and again, until it is all filtered out of the airstream.

And finally comes the DC18, or ';Dyson Slim';. This model is basically a thinner, slimmer, lighter weight version of the Dyson DC15. Like the DC15, it rolls on a ball (albeit, a much smaller ball), uses a direct gear driven motorized brush roll, and uses a similar Root Cyclone system with fewer cyclones (DC15 = 8 cyclones, DC18 = 6 cyclones). The DC18 will not get the Level 3 Root Cyclone system like the DC17. However, at 14 lbs, this will be the lightest weight, most maneuverable Dyson on the market, in comparison to its 20+ lb. counterparts. With the DC17 and DC18 launching here in within weeks, pricing has not been announced (expect that information to be announced on Friday the 13th), is has been estimated that the DC17 will go for around $450-$500, with the DC18 lightweight somewhere around $450. If I were you, I would consider only the DC15, DC17, or DC18. These three models are better refined than the earlier DC07 and DC14 models, and feature the highly efficient gear driven brush rolls (which are MUCH BETTER than the belt drive clutch units in the DC07 and DC14!!) You can find information on the DC15 at www.dyson.com, as well as information on the DC18 at www.dyson.co.uk (it has been launched in the UK, but will be in the US soon. More information on the DC17 will be available this Friday on the American Dyson site as well. I hope this helps.Looking for a new vacuum cleaner. Narrowed down to Eureka Boss Smart and a Dyson. Any advise?!?
I have a Dyson and love it, it is easy to clean and does a great job... also it has a really long plug cord so I don't have to keep switching it from outlet to outlet.Looking for a new vacuum cleaner. Narrowed down to Eureka Boss Smart and a Dyson. Any advise?!?
We bought a Dyson DC14 The Animal (Purple one) last year, we've had scores of vacuums over the years and not one could compare to our 'Animal',, we have 2 dogs and 2 cats and an active household to clean up after and I've never seen a cleaner pick up the hair and everything half as well as the Dyson. We got ours off ebay and wound up paying only $385 for ours brand new, it's actually been a dream to use, and the attachments are all very easily used. I love it.
A Dyson is your best bet because of the vortex circulation that it uses to suck up the dirt. It will never lose suction power as it goes along your floor. If price is no object then definitely choose the Dyson.
I got a dyson and I love it. My carpet looks like new.

And it was really bad with cat hair. Used my old vacumn and it died on me. Thought the rug was clean. Got the dyson and it took 3 or 4 baskets of stuff out of the rug. My carpet was worse than I thought.
Don't buy until you have investigated Miele (German designed and manufactured). Both canister and upright available. Super quiet yet powerful motor. Many thoughtful features. Relatively expensive, but less so than Dyson. Very durable, so cost amortized over machine life makes it a fantastic value. Check Consumer Reports online (if you are a member...cost about $15/yr) or research the mags at your local library.

How Can i Get Fat, im 26 years old, i tried all the ways, So please advise me ??

Don't binge on chocolates and candies and fast food. It will all just build up on your stomach. Go to GNC and ask for their weight gaining shake stuff. It works very well. But don't get too fat or you wont pick up chicks lolHow Can i Get Fat, im 26 years old, i tried all the ways, So please advise me ??
I agree with Royal... why dont you have your metabolism level's checked too. If they are too high, that may be the sole cause for your not being able to gain! Most adults have a slower metabolism, which is why most of them are over-weight. But if you arent able to gain.. then maybe your's is really fast/high.How Can i Get Fat, im 26 years old, i tried all the ways, So please advise me ??

Do you like it, is the pay good, what's the work load like, what does it invlove, would you recommend it?Job/ career advise for music?
the real question is do YOU like it.

If you love music, try and figure out what you would like to contribute to it. weather it's writing, playing or anything else in regards to it, even if it's a roadie or gopher.

and with all jobs, pay depends on what level you're at.

It's going to be whatever makes you happy.

Philanthropists generally donate to charity or to some cause, not to individuals wanting money for themselves like to start a business.

There are venture capitalists who invest in start up businesses, usually for a partial ownership. You'll need a very solid business plan before you approach them, if you expect to succeed with them.

Why would wnyone want to move TO Detroit???

Most people are trying to get away from it.
I live in Detroit and happen to be in the real estate world. Detroit has some great cities in the suburbs. Royal Oak, Huntington Woods, Troy, Livonia, Birmingham, etc are all great cities.

Right now there is a mass exodus from Detroit because of the problems with the car companies, but that means that there are plenty of great deals on homes. Your money will take you pretty far.

I need advise. I have a problem with trying to explain what I just read. Have any of u encountered this prob?

For example: I have been reading this book by Albert Camus, The Rebel. And while I read I get this adrenaline because I enjoy what I'm reading so much. And at the time I understand what's going on but minutes later, as I put the book down, it's like I can't convey what has actually happened. But sometimes it's within all my readings.

It makes me really unhappy because I want to explain and teach what I learn but I just can't.

Can someone tell me why I'm going through this?

Thank you much.I need advise. I have a problem with trying to explain what I just read. Have any of u encountered this prob?
You are too close to it. Step away for a while and then write down what you just read in a summary in journal format. You can go back and correct it until you think it's right. I know this is a lot of work and takes practice, but pretty soon you get so good, you don't need to write it down.

Anything worth doing takes practice. Ask any athlete. They'll tell you the same thing.I need advise. I have a problem with trying to explain what I just read. Have any of u encountered this prob?
This is very common, especially when you're reading complicated books like The Rebel. It's kind of like when you're in class, and things make sense while the teacher is explaining them, but then when you leave class, they're all jumbled.

When I encounter something in a book that I want to remember and pass on, I stop and ask myself how I would explain this to someone else. If I'm not sure, I'll read it again and then ask myself the same question. I find that when I can explain it, I understand and remember it much better.

Can someone who is vulnerable willing to give some advise in entering college?

Be 100% sure you are picking a field you want to be in and feel passionate about. So many people have degrees and don't use them (myself included) because for whatever reason they got a degree in the wrong field for them. Also, it is not like high school at all; you mostly have to teach yourself and be disciplined in reading and learning the material. Don't joke around. Get as much out of it as possible (after all, it is expensive and doing it a second time around isn't as easy.)Can someone who is vulnerable willing to give some advise in entering college?
Yeah, save your money and don't! It has become a worthless racket over the past decade or so. Unless you're absolutely passionate about what you are going for or you plan on continuing on through grad school it's worthless. Today everyone and their dog has an undergraduate degree. The college thing was great for the Baby Boomers, which is why they still tout the now mythical benefits of going to college. This is not only NOT your grandfather's world, it's not even your dad's world anymore, and if you have an older brother the odds are good that it's not even his world anymore considering how quickly everything changes. Look at the big picture (globalization, technology, moore's law, etc) and balance it with the micro picture (your life, dreams, etc) and make the best decision you can. Take everyone else's advice with a grain of salt (especially Baby Boomers!) as their perspective is based on an ancient civilization which was summarized as birth, school, job, marriage, kids, retirement, death. You'll be fine so long as you follow the route that you deem the one that best supports your authentic passion. And if you don't know what that is yet, wait. And in the meantime, just keep going, keep living and you will know when you know. Don't force it, and as you live and breath don't let anyone else force you towards anything that doesn't resonate in your bones. Stay away from the Boomer myth that life is a journey or you'll pay by wasting your precious time chasing an ever elusive abstraction dangling invisibly out in front of you. Life isn't a journey. Life is music. Never have I seen a passionate musician whose sole purpose of performance was to race to the end.

Now I have no idea what you're asking specifically, nor do I know how my blathering could in anyway have given you something to run with. Nevertheless, the only thing I know is that the best decision I ever made in my entire life was listening to and following my authentic inner voice. Learn when to say yes, but more importantly, how, and when to say No.

    Good luck Maestro.

Someone please advise on how much a normal delivery/c section wud cost in a fairly decent hospital in India?

cost of a normal delivery varies from Rs 10000 to Rs 25000 depending upon the type of hospital. %26amp; for c-sec it would be from 15000 to upwards of 500000 inclusive of everything.Someone please advise on how much a normal delivery/c section wud cost in a fairly decent hospital in India?
There is no fixed charge for these kind of cases, you never know what happens until you come out of the OT.Someone please advise on how much a normal delivery/c section wud cost in a fairly decent hospital in India?
15K to 50K depending on the status of the hospital. The chance of normal delivery is rare and doctors would tell you at the last minute that the child is on wrong position.... or if you wait for normal delivery the mental growth of the child will be affected etc.... You do not get a choice as a father and as a husband.
Depending on the place/city, it will cost anything between Rs.2000 to 50000/- in India.
it is round Rs.8500 -20000/- depands on the hospital or nursing home.

Could you advise me which school is better when it comes to accounting: DePaul or Loyola?

DePaul for sure, not only is it a better school, but tuition is slightly cheaper and you won't be living in the ghetto. For any business program choose DePaul, not just accounting.Could you advise me which school is better when it comes to accounting: DePaul or Loyola?
I currently attend Loyola for International Business and am transferring to Depaul. I would definitely choose Depaul, its a WAY better business school, one of the top in the country in fact. They have more job connections after college and if you consider doing their masters program, you'll be set. good luck!Could you advise me which school is better when it comes to accounting: DePaul or Loyola?
    Hands down Depaul.

Not only do they have a great business school, if you decide to change your major they also have other great programs as well. The neighborhood that Depaul is located is one of the best in Chicago, if you pick to reside on campus at Lincoln Park or even at their Downtown dorms.

I love DePaul; I highly recommend it.

My husband STOPPED having sex w/me B/C he is having an affair. HELP on advise for what i should do? ?

Its been a year since we've had any kind of sex. I'm not ready to divorce just yet.My husband STOPPED having sex w/me B/C he is having an affair. HELP on advise for what i should do? ?
If you know he's having an affair, and you're not going to stop it, and you're not going to divorce him, perhaps you should just live with it. Or see how he feels about an open marriage and go find yourself a boy toy.My husband STOPPED having sex w/me B/C he is having an affair. HELP on advise for what i should do? ?
How are you not ready to divorce him yet? The relationship is over, whether you like it or not, whether you are ready or not. He is having an affair - an ongoing affair, and he doesn't care enough about your feelings to conceal it from you. There is no marriage here, just a farce.

Consider a separation as a way to transition to divorce. Insist that he move out if he cannot honor his wedding vows; remind him that he is still responsible for bills and other payments.
Be glad. Have you any idea whether this other woman has any kind of sexually transmissible disease?

I would strongly recommend that unless she and he get tests done and both come up clean AND haven't had any other partners in a time frame acceptable by doctors, you would be better off refraining from engaging in sex with him.

Get the relationship sorted out to the point where strong friendship and commitment without sex exists, and then you can think about the next step.

I'm sorry that you are going through this but I put my health above my partner having an affair. If you, like me, have children, I intend to be around long enough for them to be adults who can manage without me before I do anything that can jeopardise or compromise my health.
Hire a private detective to get photos of them having sex. Then make copies and place the original in a safety deposit box that no one but you knows about.

Then go door to door and hand copies of the pics to all of her adult neighbors and let them know she is a home-wrecker, saying it calmly and politely. Preferably giving the pics to the married women in her neighborhood with a warning about them watching their husbands around her.

Then go to her parents home and hand them a few. And to her parents neighbors. And to any other adult relatives that she has.

Take a copy to the Church she attends and give it to the pastor and walk out.

Go to her job when she is off and hand out the pics to all the adults there.

Go to where she shops and hand the grown ups that wait on her pics.

Basically bombard her life with truth. The truth about what she is doing.

Then do the same for your husband.

Then get an attorney and file for divorce. Hire a therapist to work through your self-esteem issues. Because you obviously think very little of yourself to wait around for this man to change. Which he won't.
Why are you not ready to divorce? Do you not care about yourself? What types of relationships have you known your whole life, to think this is ok for you to stay with, or think it is all you deserve in life? Right now there is no marriage, and for a year it has not been a marriage. Do not take life for granted any longer. Make today, the beginning of a new, good, life. One where people will respect you, and that you will enjoy to the fullest! Why? Because you deserve it!!
You know for certain that he is having affair and yet you still want to be with him? Why!? What could you possibly be getting out of staying with someone who is doing that to you? I know you can't be happy, especially if he is doing that right in your face. I wish you lots of luck with this one because he obviously knows he can be with you and eat his cake too. Some guys are such douches. Don't let him play you like that because you deserve better. You will know in your heart when you have had enough so until then....
It's hard for me to understand how long you can allow this situation to exist this way. You need sex, after all. People just can't stop - but if you had sex with hubby, you'd wonder how many genital warts you'll be trying to remove in the coming weeks and months. The question is, why aren't you ready to divorce yet?
You don't really make it clear in your question what you actually want here. If you want your husband to stop his affair, I wouldn't count on it happening. You can't control his actions or his decisions, and it's been going on for a year and he won't stop unless he has some serious incentive to do so, which apparently you are unwilling to give.

You may not be ready to actually divorce yet, but you can certainly take steps to make sure you know what your rights would be later on, if you take that path. Usually the first consultation with a divorce lawyer is free.

If all you want is sex, it should be easy enough to find someone...all you need to do is join an online dating service for married women, there are plenty out there and are much more frequented by men than women, so you will have your pick. Try www.ashleymadison.com, for instance.

If you want sex specifically with HIM despite his affair, then you have to be the one who takes responsibility for communicating your desire to him and for making the first moves when you want it. But you will have to treat him as if you were merely dating him and not married...which means using protection all the time and making sure he is current on his STD tests. Of course, that would be the rule no matter who you hooked up with.
If I were you Hun, I would walk away. If he has been seeing someone else for that long, then there is something wrong. It sounds like the same situation my mom is going through. Her and my step-dad have been married for 9 years, but he is seeing someone else, leads her on, doesn't sleep with her, and lives in a completely different town. He tells her he loves her and wants her one minute and boom, then next all he wants is the other girl. I have seem my mother go through H*ll, and I don't think anyone deserves that. Even though you may not be ready for a divorce, it is best for you to talk to him find out what his reasons are, and most likely file for a divorce. It is unhealthy to be unhappy for that long, and you can always find someone who will treat you the way you deserve to be treated and give you all the things that you need... and not have to step out on you!

Best wishes! I wish you the best!
If he is having an affair, do something about it, to stop it or end it. Give yourself some worth. You deserve to be treated well. You deserve respect. You are his wife. If he can't give you the least bit of respect, then at least you can for yourself by ending his affair. If you can't, then leave him.
You need to have your own affair. It should be with a friend or a co-worker. Let off some steam. Its all bottled up and you are hurt. I wish you the best, but you need to start having sex with someone else. I am being serious. Women are strong these days and independent they cheat back not just wait around for a man.
If you are not ready to divorce then you can wait because you will be one day. You could ask him if he minded if you went out and met someone and this way you would be satisfied. There is a chance that he won't want you with anyone else and try to make the marriage work.
love can make ya do crazy things, but you really shouldnt stay in a relationship like that. if you let him do this to you and you arent doing anything about it, he will lose what little respect he had for you in the first place. personally, i would never let a guy do that to me and stay with him.
There is no advice to help you. You don't really want to be helped. He's having an affair - you don't want to leave. All that's left is what you are doing, which is nothing.

Thank goodness he has the decency to stop sex with you while he's doing his hoochie-coochie girl.
I am sorry to hear about this. Unfortunately, I think you would be wiser to divorce him unless he is willing to stop the affair and go to counseling with you. Before you resume having sex with him, he should be tested for all STD's.
Get seperated. That's not exactly divorce. But, if you still want to b married with him you have to talk to him and see if he feels the same way. Try marriage counseling. Ad if all else fails it's time to let go unfortunately.

    Best of Luck.

P.S. You don't deserve to be cheated on.
well you might as well be! i hate to be blunt but he obviously doesn't want to be with you in a sexual aspect in anymore %26amp; i'm sure that will lead to many emotional problems for you and in return they will rub off on him.
Is he still having sex with this other woman? Did he maybe catch something? I say see a counselor. If it is just he guilt inside him then maybe talking about it will help him move past the stupidity of his past. If he's still messing around, then leave him! fast!

    Best of luck
If he had an affair he has no respect for you. you need to look for someone who is going to put up with you through thick and thin. He took vows and he broke them. He has to realize he has made a mistake and I don't think he will unless you guys take time apart.
This is too hard to answer without knowing more details. What is the position with him and his other partner- Is she married ? How often do they meet? Do they intend to make a life together ?

Did he tell you about this, or have you secretly found out ?
If hes having an affair i'd leave him. I know your not ready for divorce so maybe you could move out for a while.

One thing, if he realy did love you he wouldn't have the affair (sorry for saying that but its true)
Move on and find a man who desires to have sex with you. Or you could just have your own affair like he is doing to you, sort of a 'friend with benefits' type of thing.
NOT READY FOR DIVORSE YET? WTF? come on woman! what is ready enough for you?? getting HIT? stop fooling yourself. He doesnt deserve you and you should even be thinking of what to do other that Leaving this lowlife!
This question is very disturbing... So, you know your husband is off having sex w/ someone else, yet you ask for help in how to make your husband have sex w/ you!!

Leave him sweatheart. Get a good man!
So let me get this straight ... he is cheating on you and here you are complaining why he wont have sex with you? What is the matter with you? Leave the jerk and dont look back. Have some self respect...
You know what dont let anyone tell you to leave your husband...you can forgive him and he can forgive you...pray about it and do what is best for you.
Sorry, Sweetie. You don't have a husband====you have a room mate, and not a very nice one at that. Dump the creep.
Get ready. This is a useless question. Obviously he is happy elsewhere and you need to get the heck out of there.
Be thankful that he is not bringing home all his ';hook-up's'; bad germs/diseases! Personally, I would not want to have sex with him again. Find someone who cares for you ~ he is out there somewhere!
If he's sleeping around, you don't want to have sex with him 'less you want STDs or you want them passed on to your kids
he is the one with the problem..for yourself, maybe getting some kind of counseling in how to deal with his affair would be good for you

thank you !!Hi i want to start a african/malwi cichlid tank!i need some help and advise on how to set up. and choose fish1
I assume you have a 240 L tank since you say it is 4' long.

There is no need to change your gravel to sand if you don't want to. I personally use pool filter sand in some of my tanks and gravel in others. It depends on whether the fish are large or small and whether or not they like to rearrange the place to suit themselves.

My cichlids, all of them, do quite well in dechlorinated tap water that is not chemically adjusted to try and match their home water pH in Africa or South America. Very few of the fish for sale in the hobby today are ';wild caught'; fish that need extreme pH to survive. Wild caught fish are very expensive and not worth the trouble unless you are a commercial breeder looking to beef up your bloodlines.

I have South Americans (they come from 6.5 pH water), West African riverine cichlids (their home water is also a low pH) and Rift Lake cichlids (they come from 7.8 up to 8.4 pH in the wild). All of mine are housed in tap water that is at 7.4 out of the faucet. No adjustments are made to the water, which saves me money and heartache.

I acclimate my fish to my water very slowly, sometimes taking up to 3 hours as I add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of tank water to their bag water every 10-15 minutes so they are not shocked by the pH change when they are introduced to the tank. This eliminates any screwing around with pH, acidity and alkalinity later, that causes more problems than it helps.

Bottom line for adjusting water parameters for the fish, don't bother. As long as you acclimate them properly, they will be fine.

Some of the cichlid salts sold exclusively for cichlids are good to add periodically because they need certain trace elements needed by some cichlids that are just not in local tap or well waters.

Do not use any rocks that react when you put a few drops of vinegar on them. They will change the properties of your water and may cause you problems down the road. I use sandstone, that I test with vinegar, to build the caves and rock formations in my tanks.

    Always have more caves and hideouts than you have fish. The dominant males will move from time to time and the displaced fish will need someplace to go when they are kicked out of their ';place.';

Unless you are planning to have the West African dwarf riverine cichlids, plants will be torn to shreds by almost all of the Rift Lake cichlids. Most SA's are not kind to plants either.

Most cichlids are satisfied with a good high protein flake food, but if you get some large ones, you might want to get them some good quality pellets. Not too large, though. IMHO, large dry pellets can be the cause of Malawi Bloat which can be fatal. Only feed once a day and only what they will finish eating in 2-3 minutes. I also skip a day once a week which keeps them interested.

Obviously, if you plan to breed them, you would feed different food and more often. Although, my fish spawn for me all the time with not too much coaxing. I currently have angelfish fry, albino and brown bushynose pleco fry, paleatus cory fry and blue pseudotropheus zebra fry growing out in different tanks.

You ask which are more colorful, Africans or Malawi? Malawi cichlids are Africans, it is one of the Rift Lakes. You may have meant south American or African? Personally, I think the Africans are the prettiest and most varied in colors, patterns and behaviours.

If I were you, I would start with some electric yellows, red or tangerine zebras, blue zebras and maybe some saulosi. Unless you plan to breed them, you should attempt to get all males as they will be much prettier than the females.

Any good filter that cycles the water in your tank at least 8 times per hour will be fine for your tank. The gallons per hour (GPH) are usually printed on the box of the filter. For example, a 50 gallon tank should have a 400 GPH filter.

Cichlids do not need a lot of light, they just need a day night cycle. I have flourescent shop lights hanging over my tanks that keep the plants growing on the tanks with plants (dwarf cichlids, tropicals and other creatures). Some of my tanks do not have lights, just the room light is enough for them.

If you would like to talk further, email me, I love to talk about fish, cichlids in particular. More questions? I will help as much as I can.

8Hi i want to start a african/malwi cichlid tank!i need some help and advise on how to set up. and choose fish1
First and last rule of cichlids (or even Malawi cichlid): Never generalize or you will be wrong. If somebody tells you they're herivorous they're wrong - they range from fully herbivorous to fully carnivorous. If somebody tells you they're aggressive and kill everything, they're wrong. They range from mild to hostile, and on Labidochromis species less commonly found is as meek as any community fish. If you hear anything pertaining to cichlids in general assume it wrong and research the species that you have in mind.

How to start a Malawi Tank.

Step 1: Learn about the different fish you can get and the different methods of stocking the tank. I know you don't want links, but www.cichlid-forum.com is all a cichlid keeper really needs, it's got a great forum and tons of reliable and indespensable information. Your choices are basically: haps/aulonocara (peacocks), small haps/aulonocara/mild mbuna, or more aggressive mbuna. Mbuna tend to do well in higher numbers and appreciate tons of rockwork. Haps prefer lower numbers and more moderate amounts of rockwork. Aulonocara fall somewhere in between. I tend to prefer mild mbuna and small haps because there tends to be less aggression issues and it can make for a nice mix. The important thing is to read up and learn what is compatable before buying fish, not after.

Lots of filtration, they could care less about lighting - it's for you.

Step 2: The water. Malawi is not as hard and alkaline as Tanganyika and in most cases you can use your tap water as-is. Any PH 7 or higher is fine, though 8 to 8.5 is ideal. These are fully fresh water fish and salt is not needed, though there are mixtures of salts that can help raise your PH, KH, and GH to desirable levels if you need it. There are store bought additives or a great (and cheap) recipe that does the job just as reliably (if not more) on that website. Don't add anything beyond water conditioner unless you know why you are doing it and what affect it will have.

Fill a container with water and run an aerater in it for a few hours. Then measure the parameters and it will give you the most accurate reading of what your tap water is like.

Step 3: Decorating. Hiding spots are a must, and rocks are the most natural and easiest way to do this. I use limestone in mine because it naturally helps keep the alkalinity and hardness up. You can use any rock that's safe including granite, lava rock, river rock, holy rock, slate... lots available. I go to a rock cutter who sells it for 5% of the cost of a fish store. How much rock depends on the fish you keep - with mbuna you can do a total rockscaping from end to end, while with haps you'll want it set up more sparse with more free swimming room. My current tank has has 180lbs of limestone, my last 120lbs of lava rock. I never used anything on the bottom because the tanks are built to handle the weight without ingenius human intervention - just make sure the bottom rocks are resting on the glass, not on the substrate, or the fish could dig and undermine them (while the glass can handle weight, any falling rock will shatter obviously shatter it).

For substrate you can go with what you like, but if you want to encourage the natural behaviour of digging and sifting I recommend sand or a fine gravel. I use a simple playsand from Homedepot that works perfectly fro 4 bucks a bag in all my tanks and while since it doesn't grab and sink waste like gravel and there is more floating particulate in the water, it keeps the tank water pristine and low nitrate for the same reason.

Step 4: Pre-plan the tank based on compatible species dependent on what you like and what is available to you (take some trips to the fish store without intention of buying to see what's available, but look on the web to see what they'll actually look like as adults). Most species should be kept in groups of at least one male to three females, while some are more aggressive and need even more females. A couple of species are mild enough that it doesn't really matter.

Choose species that look different from each other and come from different genus, this helps keep aggression down. Make sure you know what the adult colors end up being, as some females remain dull in colour and this could disappoint the unwary. Also, keeping singles can work with more mild species, but with some a fish with none of its kind to interact with may end up harassing weaker species.

My last Malawi tank (75 gallon):

    1 Aulonocara Maulana (male)

    2 Red Empress (male/female)

    6 Labidochromis Caeruleus (2m/4f)

8 Pseudotropheus Acei (about half and half but not sure)

    6 Synodontis Multipunctatus

My current Malawi tank (75 gallon)

    10 Labidochromis Caeruleus (some new)

    7 Pseudotropheus Demasoni (undetermined)

6 Synodontis Multipunctatus (same ones, they'll be with me till they, or I, die)

Unfortunately there is so much to know and we couldn't possibly cover it all. Go to that website and research with patience. Planning the tank with the anticipation of what will come should be an enjoyable experience and will ensure success for you and your fishes. I took a couple of months before making my final decision on my first cichlid tank and I'm glad I did. Good luck.
This is a long answer to a lot of questions. Generally speaking, it's best to use a calcium-based sand or gravel for the bottom of the tank. This may help keep the chemistry in the proper range for these fish and will make them look better. I like using a thin layer, less than one inch, so that the aquarium is easier to clean. Filtration must be strong and efficient. Use your favorite kind of filter but make sure that it is rated for about double the actual size of your aquarium. Do not add regular salt or sea salt mix to your aquarium! If you are going to add supplements to increase pH and hardness, use products made for African cichlids. Follow the instructions on the bottle to create an ideal environment for the fish. Use rocks for decorations. Like the sand, it's often best to use a calcium or coral based rock for the same reasons. Plants will generally not survive in most cichlid tanks. The high pH prevents them from being able to survive. There are a few exceptions but most of the common cichlids at aquarium stores will rip these up. Artificial plants can be used but may not look as good as other decorations like rocks. As for which fish to buy, there are more than 2000 species of cichlids from the East African Lakes so it's almost impossible to answer that question. Pick out some that you like and then see what else might live with them.
I am not familiar with the juwel tank, but a couple of large canister filters should do the job. There are a ton of brands out there. Eheim, Hagen, Rena all make good canisters. If your tank is pre-drilled (has plumbing in the back), then get a sump. You don't have to get sand, but most cichlid keepers will get aragonite sand to keep the hardness high. You also need to decide what kinds of malawi cichlids you want to keep. Don't mix peacocks and haps with mbunas, you will eventually have issues with aggression. If you decide on mbunas, put a layer of styrofoam down first, then cover with sand. This will keep all the rock work that is necessary from damaging the bottom pane of glass. If you go with haps and peacocks, you can put in a few rocks and decorations, but these fish like to have areas to swim. With Mbunas, the more rocks the better. Salt is a good idea. All you need is rock salt, this can be purchased in an 80 lb. bag at Home Depot for less than $10. About 1/4 cup per 10 gallons should do the trick. Keep in mind that salt doesn't evaporate, so only add salt when you do a water change, and only replace what you took out. Try to stay away from ocean rock, it can cause abrasions. Smooth rock and slate work great. Go with a high quality food like New Life Spectrum. You will need to go to a high quality pet store to find it, but well worth it. Most cichlids don't like really bright light, and will actually fade out under intense lighting, so a single flurescent is perfect. Use the slate to create caves for the smaller fish to hide. You can use artificial plants, but Lake Malawi has very few plants, and the cichlids will quickly shred most live plants. I have tried java fern in a peacock tank, and java fern is not a plant that fish normally eat. The peacocks shredded it and there was nothing left in a matter of days. It is hard for me to tell you which type is better. To put it simply, most female mbunas have attractive coloration, all female peacocks are grey/brown and most female haps are lacking in color, with a few exceptions like the Venustus. Peacocks are much more expensive than mbunas or haps in most cases. So if you are poor, go with mbunas. Most haps get quite large, so if you go with them, keep their eventual size in mind. I have had good success mixing haps and peacocks in the past, and my 55 is currently a mix of all 3. I know I went against my own advice, and now I am regretting it. The male exasperatus is flexing his muscles and terrorizing all my peacocks and haps. I will probably have to trade him in or give him away. Good luck with what ever you decide to go with, and remember to rearrange your decorations each time you add new mbunas or the newbies will get an unkind welcome.
