Generally speaking, upgrading RAM is one of the efficient ways to make your computer more responsive. And generally speaking most computers are quite responsive when running on 1GB of RAM.
Vista, however, is the most resource hog of all Windows. To have Vista run more responsively, you will need a minimum of 2GB of RAM.
To find out how much RAM your computer can handle, you need to know the model number, usually locate somewhere on the computer, then go on line to places like Crucial.com, Kingston.com, etc. and look up the memory upgrade for your computer. These sites will tell you how much RAM your computer can take by entering the make and model of your computer.
Also keep in mind that the video card in your computer can use up some of that 1GB if your video card is integrated. So you will actually have less than 1GB of RAM for everything else.
If you have a friend who is computer savvy, you can ask the friend to do the upgrade for you. It's not rocket science.
You can even do it yourself if you feel incline. Just go to HP site and look up the RAM/memory Upgrade How-to. Usually you need a small tip screwdriver, Philip or flat tip, to remove the cover where the RAM is located.
The local shops, like Best Buy or Circuit City, may charge you up to $60 for the labor. Frankly, it is $60 more than I will ever want to pay.
Just remember, if you want to do it yourself, make sure you turn off the computer, then disconnect the power cord, and REMOVE the battery.
Depending on where the RAM is on your computer, it can take anywhere from a few minutes to 1/2 hour to upgrade.
If you can read and follow the instruction, then you should have no problem upgrading the RAM in your computer.
Points to remember:
1. POWER OFF the computer
2. DISCONNECT the power cord
3. REMOVE the battery.
Good luck!Any advise on getting a new laptop? I have now a HP 1G in which Vista takes all the memory?
Hi! All laptops come with memory so if yours came with 1GB you should be able to upgrade to 2GB. You need a minimum of 1GB to run VISTA. I used to be a marketing rep for HP, so I know that you can double your memory however be sure to have a licensed technician install the RAM card or you will void your warranty with HP. Good Luck ! If you do decide to get a new computer I would stay away from Acer, EMachines, Dell, they are cheap for a reason. Check with your in store repair shop and ask which brands they see the most in for repairs and emachines die they die just buy new.Any advise on getting a new laptop? I have now a HP 1G in which Vista takes all the memory?
oh you dont have to get a new laptop just change to Linux Ubunty it is free and very useful i love it , it has a lots of free software , anything u can think of 4 free and it will free almost all ur mem
Why not put more memory in your laptop? RAM is really cheap nowadays.
Dell Lattitude D410. You can go to skinit.com and check it out. It can have windows Vista. It is light, a comforatable size, and it looks good too. I got one on my bday, and i am using it right now, and loving it!!
No need to.. just need to tweak your system a bit..
Go to start Menu choose ';Run'; type ';msconfig';.
Go to startup. Hide all the microsoft processes, leaving the antivirus, uncheack everything else.. Vista clutters up all the memory.. Restart.
Still doesn't help.. Upgrade the RAM. That's a cheaper %26amp; a more logical option.. it's quite easy lemme know if you need help..
Which laptop do you own.. I own a Compaq 1.66 C2D, 1 GB RAM, Vista Home works fine after a little bit of tweak..
