This varies from state to state.

In PA there are only EMT's and Paramedics.

In NY there are 3 levels of EMT then Paramedic.

Start at the beginning. If you are young (usually 16) you may become a First Responder, trained in basic first aid and lifesaving techniques designed to aid victims until the ambulances arrive. It's a great first step.

If you're old enough, definitely take the first EMT course offered. Its the basic knowledge you need to get started in the field and it's very interesting stuff. Try and get sponsored by a local squad who will let you ride along on calls. (This is called precepting, and you'll need to log in a certain amount of these hours to get certified).

The other EMT levels will allow you to further this training, by introducing you to skills you'll need as a paramedic, but take it slow and work up the chain.

Contact your local health department and they should be able to give you upcomming class information.

If you can stomach images you'll see, you'll find it's a very rewarding career. Good luck!Advise for someone looking to get his EMT certification?
Contact your local technical college and ask to speak to a counselor. They should be able to give you all the info on both programs.
It depends on where you live

search on the net for the ambulance station in your area and they will have all the info on what you are looking for.

But I can tell you that you have to be EMT-basic certified to be able to take the classes to become an EMT intermediate and from there you can become a paramedic.

So check out the net.
